Vacancies exist in the Department of Public Works and Transportation, Bureau of Highways and Equipment Maintenance.

Examples of Duties

Job Purpose
Under general supervision, performs skilled diagnostic repair and maintenance work on diesel and gasoline powered trucks weighing one ton or more, construction equipment, and the hydraulic and electrical systems on vehicles and equipment.

Essential Job Duties

  • Repairs, rebuilds, and maintains diesel and gasoline powered trucks weighing one ton or more and heavy construction equipment.
  • Overhauls and repairs gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, clutches, and brakes.
  • Repairs and replaces damaged body parts.
  • Prepares metal body parts for final painting.
  • Paints truck and equipment bodies.
  • Repairs tires.
  • Overhauls, repairs and rebuilds complex hydraulic systems and their components.
  • Diagnoses machine failures.
  • Repairs electrical systems on vehicles and equipment.
  • Removes, repairs, and replaces heavy track systems.
  • Performs general welding of steel and other metal parts of machinery using electric, acetylene, brazing, or cutting techniques as appropriate.
  • Fabricates steel parts and modifies equipment to improve performance, safety, and/or durability.
  • Installs, repairs, maintains aerial ladders, pumps, warning devices, and other specialized equipment used on fire and medical emergency vehicles.
  • Leads and instructs lesser skilled workers. EXAMPLES OF OTHER DUTIES
    • Road tests and otherwise operates equipment and vehicles.
    • May perform repairs in the field.
    • May operate equipment to tow disabled vehicles and equipment to the shop.
    • Performs other related duties as required. NOTE: The duties and responsibilities listed above are for the purpose of determining a common set of minimum qualifications for all positions in this class.       Qualifications

      Five years' experience in automotive repair and maintenance;

      Two years of which were in heavy truck and heavy construction equipment engines and special components, including diesel, track, and hydraulic equipment.

      Related training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years for the required experience.

      Licenses and Certificates
      Some positions may require possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a commercial, class B or class A Maryland driver's license and a current Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. License may require endorsements and/or the absence of certain restrictions.

      Preferred Qualifications
      Certification by the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence in Heavy - Duty Trucks T1 (Gasoline engines) - T2 (Diesel engines) - T3 (Drive Train) - T4 (Brakes) - T5 (Suspension and Steering) - T6 (Electrical Systems) T7 (HVAC) is preferred.

      EXAMINATION PROCEDURE
      Applicants will be qualified based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as stated on their application, which includes answers to the supplemental questions.       Conditions of Employment

      Employees hired after July 1, 2022 are required to participate in the Baltimore County Employees' Retirement System, with very limited exceptions.

      Physical and Environmental Conditions
      The work of this classification entails the performance of heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of vehicles, machinery, tools, and equipment.

      Salary

      Annual Salary review - Step increases may be granted on anniversary date based on satisfactory job performance

      Longevity Increases - In accordance with the specific pay schedule, a full-time merit or classified employee may receive a longevity increase, equivalent to one step, upon completion of a certain number of years of classified service with the County.
