Job Description:
The Director of Development plays a pivotal role in advancing
the mission and goals of Lifelong by leading fundraising efforts,
cultivating donor relationships, and overseeing strategic
fundraising initiatives. The role requires a dynamic and
experienced individual with a proven track record in non-profit
fundraising, team leadership, and donor engagement. The Director of
Development reports to the Lifelong CEO and collaborates closely
with the board of directors, executive team and other senior staff
members. This role has three direct reports: Annual Giving Officer;
Corporate Engagement Officer; Grants Coordinator. Areas of
Responsibility
- Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy
aligned with the organization's mission, vision and strategic
goals.
- Identify and prioritize funding opportunities: grants, major
gifts, corporate sponsorships, individual donations and fundraising
events.
- Analyze market fundraising trends and pivot strategies
accordingly to maximize revenue generation.
- Donor Cultivation and Stewardship:
- Build and maintain strong relationships with personal portfolio
of current and potential donors, ensuring effective communication
and engagement.
- Support the CEO in management of their personal portfolio of
major donors and stewardship activities.
- Develop personalized cultivation and stewardship plans for
major donors and corporate partners.
- Oversee donor recognition and appreciation programs to foster
long-term commitment.
- Grant Writing and Research:
- In partnership with the Business Development team, provide
oversight of the Grants Coordinator and private foundation
function, including maintaining a healthy pipeline of grant
opportunities, grant proposals, and ensuring timely submissions and
reporting.
- Oversee the planning, organizing and execution of current
fundraising events, Gay Bingo, and any future Dining Out For Life
and/or Gala events as well as all donor cultivation events. Oversee
event coordinator/contractor.
- Team Leadership and Collaboration:
- Supervise and mentor philanthropy team members by providing
guidance and support for professional growth.
- Collaborate with other departments to ensure alignment of
fundraising efforts and organizational goals.
- Participate in board meetings and provide regular reports on
fundraising progress and initiatives.
- Financial Analysis and Reporting:
- Analyze fundraising data and financial metrics to assess the
effectiveness of different fundraising strategies.
- Generate regular reports for the executive team and board to
track progress of fundraising goals.
- Collaboration with Marketing and Communications:
- Work closely with the marketing and communications consultants
to develop strategies that effectively promote fundraising
initiatives and engage donors.
- Ensure consistent messaging and branding across all development
materials. Skills/Experience Core Competencies:
- Strong understanding of philanthropic trends and best practices
in fundraising.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including
grant writing and public speaking.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and experience managing a
team.
- Proficiency in using fundraising software, donor databases, and
Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with donors, board
members, and other stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Passion for the Lifelong's mission and a commitment to ethical
fundraising practices.Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field preferred; Master's
degree is a plus.
- Minimum of seven years of proven experience in nonprofit
fundraising, with a track record of securing six and seven figure
major gifts and grants.
- All staff are currently required to provide proof of full
COVID-19 vaccination prior to hiring. The use of personal
protective equipment to prevent exposure to COVID-19 may be
required in the future should exposure warrant
