Job Announcement
- This position includes a signing bonus for fully qualified new
county employees in the amount of $10,000.Fairfax County Health
Department is seeking dedicated Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) to
improve the health and wellbeing of children in Fairfax County
public schools. You will be the leading advocate for public health
and well-being and care onsite, contributing to both school and
community health.This position implements the School Health
Services program under the supervision of the public health nurse
in the health department's School Health Services Division. As an
LPN you will be responsible for providing basic nursing care
services and supervision for students, in a Fairfax County Public
School setting. Assesses and determines students' health status and
follows appropriate protocols to provide care, screening, and
documentation. Monitors and manages students with acute or chronic
disease and/or disabilities and documents the care services
provided in accordance with standard protocol. Supports individual
care needs, including insulin monitoring, and administers
medication and treatment in line with health standards and
practices. Manages medications, routine school health room
activities and updates student health records daily. Assists in the
monitoring and updating of student' care plans. Compiles and
submits health room statistics and reports using computer data
entry skills. Responds to medical emergencies and performs CPR and
first aid. Maintains current BLS certification and licensing

Licensed Practical Nurses are full-time merit positions that are
scheduled to work less than 12 months (approximately 38 weeks per
year). Work schedule will be based on the service needs of the
Health Department and Fairfax County Public Standard School Year
Calendar. Multiple positions may be filled from this
announcement.Required Knowledge Skills And Abilities(The knowledge,
skills and abilities listed in this specification are
representative of the class but are not an all-inclusive list.)
- Knowledge of practical nursing skills gained through an
accredited practical nursing program;
- Skill in performing technical nursing procedures (e.g.,
injections, venipuncture, blood pressure screening);
- Ability to identify questionable test findings;
- Ability to perform CPR or perform emergency treatment for
life-threatening conditions;
- Ability to elicit sufficient pertinent medical information from
a client and record a medical history that is complete and
accurate;
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships
with clients and staff members.Employment StandardsMINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS:Graduation from an accredited Practical Nursing
program; plus two years of experience as a Licensed Practical
Nurse.CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
- Possession of current license or a multistate licensure
privilege to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the
Commonwealth of Virginia
- BLS Certification (Required within 30 days)NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS:The appointee to this position will be required to
complete a criminal background check, child protective services
check, sanction screenings, and Tuberculosis test to the
satisfaction of the employer.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge and understanding of a school health program and
experience providing health care services to school aged children
in ethnically diverse populations.
- Knowledge of medications and medication management
administration practices, and experience reviewing and
administering childhood vaccinations.
- Possess a high level of integrity and discretion in handling
confidential information and professionalism in dealing with
students, parents and colleagues.
- Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills,
with the ability to provide general health information to school
age children and families with a wide variety of health problems
under the supervision of a registered nurse.
- Strong interpersonal abilities to communicate effectively and
clearly with a diverse population and various stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and on interdisciplinary
teams.
- Proficiency with technology and the ability to learn and adapt
to new systems, software, Microsoft Office, and digital tools as
needed.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to ensure
safety and well-being of students.
- Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability to respond
effectively to situations and meet public health goals.PHYSICAL
REQUIREMENTS:Ability to frequently communicate and be understood
when communicating in-person, over the phone or computer; ability
to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in
writing. Ability to maintain BLS certification and physically
perform CPR/AED techniques. Ability to read (visual acuity) data on
a computer monitor; ability to operate keyboard driven equipment
and computer and use of touchscreen. Ability to read, write,
understand, interpret and apply information at a moderately complex
level. Generally, works in an office/ school health room
environment yet may occasionally be required to perform job duties
outside of the typical office setting. Job requires the ability to
alternate sitting and standing on a frequent basis, able walk,
kneel, bend/stoop, extend arms to reach outward and upward and
climbing stairs. Job requires the ability to use hands and arms to
lift, push, pull and/or carry objects or young children, as much as
10 or more pounds in weight on a frequent basis. Uses hands and
fingers to grasp, handle, feel, and/or manipulate small objects or
equipment. All duties performed with or without reasonable
